PS 5 Gallery
Located at the Michael Conti School in Jersey City, NJ, the PS 5 Gallery activates the entrance to the school auditorium into a space of inquiry and engagement through art. Composed out of modular gridwall units, milk crates, and zip ties, the gallery repurposes everyday objects to showcase three- and two-dimensional artwork. Plywood panels serve as display platforms for sculpture, nameplates for signage and artist credits, as well as opaque spacers to break up layers of gridding throughout the gallery. Reconfigurable, the gallery supports a variety of layouts and learning models for kindergarten to 8th grade. An integrated learning lab with supply storage, seat cushions, and a whiteboard serves as a portable classroom within the gallery- activated by crate chairs which migrate between exhibition and lab space. A living archive celebrates student process work with dedicated art folders for each student. Artists share doodles, peers leave notes, and visitors get a glimpse into evolving artist portfolios. Accompanying the gallery is a Playbook, an interactive guide printed by Risograph. Comprised of questions, art prompts, scavenger hunt activities and spaces for note taking and drawing, the Playbook compels students to consider the impact of art making, art viewing, and art spaces on learning within a school environment.
